Alby’s, Edinburgh

I started to see Alby’s presence trickle in quite steadily across social media and now it makes a frequent appearance. Opening in 2019, this sandwich shop has already gained a loyal following. You’re possibly thinking how exciting can sandwiches be? But I guarantee you’ll want to stick around to hear about these.

Found on the corner of Commercial Street and North Junction Street, this small, inconspicuous restaurant serves big, hot sandwiches day and night. Throughout the day you can pop in for a takeaway or grab a seat at one of the tables. If you’re visiting at night it’s BYOB, so you can enjoy one of these incredible sandwiches with some of your favourite wine. Whatever time you visit, it’s not pretentious. What you see is what you get at Alby’s; good, down to earth food, in a casual environment.

On my visit, I grabbed lunch to takeaway and the beef short rib is the filling I was expecting to pick, but when I got there the smoked ham hock, savoy cabbage, cheddar, Branston’s pickle, crisps & rocket caught my eye. The menu isn’t huge, but everything sounded delicious and it wasn’t just your typical sandwich options. They also serve wee bits like house fries, Jerusalem artichokes and broccoli with truffled burrata cream, which it took me a lot of strength not to order. I’ll have to go back with friends to try more!

I couldn’t wait to get home and as soon as I had my first bite it instantly became the best sandwich I’ve ever eaten. All of the sandwiches are made on focaccia, which is an absolute game changer. The warm, buttery focaccia was a dream to eat and every bite was filled with so much flavour. I literally wouldn’t have changed a thing about the sandwich and even though it was more than enough to fill me, I was still upset when it was over!

It’s easy to tell that the team behind Alby’s have a lot of passion for what they do and that can be seen and tasted in their delicious produce. If you want a sandwich that makes you say ‘MMM’ out loud, then this is the place to go.
