Harry Potter has become synonymous with Britain because there are so many connections with both the books and the films. With many places in these Wizarding World stories being based in London, it means that when it came to the films, a lot of the filming was done in the city itself. Below you can see the spots you can visit for free, and how they were used in the films.
Charing Cross Road
Harry visits The Leaky Cauldron for the first time in the Philospher’s Stone and Hagrid walks Harry along Charing Cross Road to get there.
Diagon Alley has to be one of the most magical places and in Philosopher’s Stone Leadenhall Market was where they filmed Harry’s first visit here.
In Philosopher’s Stone, you see Harry heading into London to buy all of his school items, but first he needs to get some money. Gringotts is the wizarding bank he visits, and Australia House was used as the set for this.
Nothing can beat Hogwarts for the most magical place, but there’s something special about the destination that connects the Muggle and magical worlds. Kings Cross is where Harry and his friends board the train to take them to Hogwarts every year, and although Platform 9 ¾ isn’t a real station here, there is a designated area that you can visit.
Although it’s Kings Cross Station that The Hogwarts Express departs from, it’s actually St Pancras Station that is shown in the films because of it’s stunning exterior. It’s here that Harry and Ron start their journey to Hogwarts in Mr Weasley’s flying Ford Anglia in Chamber of Secrets.
The headquarters of The Order of the Phoenix is 12 Grimmauld Place, which is also The House of Black. The exterior for this was shot on Claremont Square during Order of the Phoenix and Deathly Hallows: Part 1.
At the beginning of Half Blood Prince, we get a feel for how things have changed. Voldemort is rising to power again and the Millennium Bridge is destroyed during a Death Eater attack.
This is where Hermione Apparates to with Harry and Ron in Deathly Hallows: Part 1, after the Death Eaters invade Bill and Fleurs wedding.
A lot happens in Westminster during Half Blood Prince. The entrance to the Ministry of Magic was filmed at the corner of Scotland Place and New Scotland Yard. And here is where Dumbledore’s Army took part in their first battle.
