I spotted RadiCibus on Instagram earlier this year and I’ve wanted to try it ever since. I finally went with a couple of colleagues in November, one of which is Italian, and I was very excited. The restaurant is a basement establishment in Stockbridge, it’s relatively small in size, which makes it a lovely, intimate setting. On entering it felt warm and cosy and I found one of my friends already seated at one of the tables. Throughout the evening it was only us, plus a table of 2 and one single diner, which I was surprised at for a Thursday night in Edinburgh. It would have been great to have dined with more people in the restaurant to create a better atmosphere, but I enjoyed the layout of the restaurant itself anyway.
The service was a tad strange. We decided what wine we would order and asked our server for the bottle, and instead of writing it down he kept asking what we were having to eat. It took a little while to realise that he was saying this to check that the wine was suitable for the food we were ordering. The communication wasn’t great, and it could have been asked much more politely. After receiving excellent recommendations and tasters from the sommelier, we went with a bottle he recommended. The poor communication aside, this was a lovely service, which got our expectations up for the rest of the evening. However, we didn’t really see much of the staff after this; no one came to check on us, the food or see if we wanted more wine.
The bad service was a shame because the food was really good! We started with the calamari and salumi to share. The calamari was lovely and light; the perfect appetizer. The salumi board was huge and had an incredible selection of meat and bread, with balsamic and oil for dipping. Between the 3 of us, we ordered beetroot tagliatelle with wild boar ragu and aged pecorini, tortelli with gorgonzola and pecan and the final dish was spaghetti with clams, chilli, parsley pesto and almond flakes. I thoroughly enjoyed all of the pasta, it tasted very fresh and filling without being a ridiculous sized portion. My favourite of the 3 was definitely the tagliatelle with wild boar ragu, I would highly recommend this.
I’m keen to try RadiCibus again, preferably at the weekend to see if the atmosphere and service improve because I rated the food highly, but I’m not sure I’ll be rushing back! The wine and the salumi platter were the highlights of the meal for me, with the service being my biggest disappointment.
