Nok’s Kitchen is a Thai restaurant in Stockbridge that Sam and I had been trying to visit for ages. After returning from Thailand last August and devouring so much tasty food, we were trying with more urgency to get a table at Nok’s Kitchen. We finally managed on a Wednesday night this winter and we were ecstatic to slip in to the warm and intimate restaurant.
We were greeted, as if old friends, and taken to a small table in the corner, which was perfect for us because it provided our own space, but we didn’t lose the atmosphere of the restaurant. After ordering a tiger and a glass of white wine we opened our menus and started to deliberate on what to eat. The menu has a lot of great sounding options, which made deciding quite difficult, but we finally managed to make up our minds. To start we decided to share the chicken satay and golden basket – sliced beef in a basket with sauce and herbs. For my main, I was torn between a couple of options, but I chose the soft shell crab yellow curry. Sam was instantly drawn to the lamb shank massaman curry and ordered this with ease.
It didn’t ever feel too long of a wait before we got our food, and neither was it too short. When ordering, I thought I would prefer the chicken satay over the golden basket, but both were delicious! The chicken satay is served with peanut sauce and a cucumber relish, the relish added extra flavour and texture, which I thoroughly enjoyed. The golden basket is a different starter to what I would normally order and for this reason I would recommend it. The soft beef and the crispy basket were a great combination and the chilli and herbs made the dish incredibly tasty.
The portion sizes here are very generous and when our main courses arrived, I was concerned that we had ordered too much food. However, they were both unbelievably tasty, so we managed to eat almost everything! The lamb shank was ginormous and incredible value for money. My curry was a good size and full of flavour, without being too spicy. Both of us commented that it has been our favourite Thai meal, outside of Thailand. Unfortunately, we couldn’t squeeze in any dessert, but there will be plenty more visits for that. If there’s one restaurant to add to your list for this year, make it Nok’s Kitchen!
