Brandon’s of Canonmills, Edinburgh

August is always focused on the Fringe for me, but you have to start a day of shows with a good brunch. On a Saturday during the Fringe, 5 of us chose Brandon’s because it’s close to Katie’s flat and it had been on our radar for a while. When I saw this instagram post from Plate Expectations, I knew exactly what I was going to order.

We were seated in a cosy booth and left to pour over the extensive menu. Although I had already made my decision, I was almost swayed a few times by lots of other yummy sounding options. In the end, I stuck to my guns and ordered the salt beef, pickle & mustard bagel. The other girls ordered a mixture of poached eggs on toast, beans on toast and the smoked haddock hash.

We got some Bloody Mary’s and other drinks while we waited for our meals to arrive. I loved that the Bloody Mary’s came with no spice, but with a selection of condiments for you to completely customize the drink to your own taste. It did seem to take a while for the food to arrive and my Bloody Mary was almost finished when my meal arrived.

Unfortunately, Fran is allergic to nuts and had been served her poached eggs on walnut bread instead of white. However, the team replaced her meal and removed it from our bill. So, although Fran had to wait a while longer, we were happy it was dealt with efficiently.

I think we all enjoyed our meal, but being such a big menu we would all opt for something different on our next visit. The bagel was delicious, but I would have preferred it packed with more beef, extra mustard and a little less pickle. I would still have the salt beef bagel again, but I definitely want to sample more of their menu.

Brandon’s is a lovely place to visit at the weekend because it’s situated in beautiful Canonmills, where you can enjoy a morning walk beside the Water of Leith, before settling down to brunch, in a lovely, bright restaurant.
