Edinburgh Food Club – The Devil’s Advocate

The first food club of 2017 fell on me to choose the restaurant. I decided I would do it for Burn’s Night and pick a Scottish eatery to celebrate the occasion. There’s little that’s more Scottish than the Royal Mile, so I chose The Devil’s Advocate just off of the historic street. I had been here a few times for drinks and it’s been thoroughly enjoyable, but I had never eaten here before.

There were 7 of us dining and we were seated in the upstairs mezzanine area. We ordered some prosecco whilst we waited for the entire group to arrive. Once we were all organised and had studied both the dinner and dessert menu (it’s important to make informed decisions), it was time to order. Christine and I decided to share the Serrano ham, manchego cheese, bread, oil and olives to start and I chose the duck confit for my main. Throughout the entire evening the service was fantastic; our waiter was always on top of our drinks orders and everything was delivered promptly and without fuss.

Our starter was great for sharing and not too heavy before our main meal. I’m not a lover of olives, but I enjoyed the rest of the dish. After a short break, and ordering another round of drinks, our mains arrived and looked delightful. My portion size was ideal because it was filling, but I could still move afterwards! Because this was my first time eating at The Devil’s Advocate, I had no real expectations of the food, but I thought this dish was delicious. The sauce that covered the meat and vegetables was especially tasty, due to the touch of sweetness that enhanced the flavours of the duck. Once we had cleared our plates, we took a few minutes before deciding on a couple of cheese boards to finish our meal.

I had a good experience overall, but because of the restaurants location the prices were quite high for a main meal. Personally, I think the atmosphere is good for having drinks with friends, but I wasn’t a huge fan of the layout for a group dinner. However, I thoroughly enjoyed my meal – especially the duck – I would most certainly have this again. The Devil’s Advocate is good for a couple of people looking for great food in a nice, but not overly fancy setting.
