I used to go to Revolution Bar (Rev) in Aberdeen quite a lot whilst I was at university, but I had only been to the Edinburgh branch once, until my second visit on Monday night. I have a lot of good memories of Rev, so when I found out they were launching a new menu I jumped at the chance to give it a try*!
Rev usually have a lot of good deals on, but Mondays are the preferred day to visit because you get 50% off selected main dishes – this means more money for sides and cocktails! The menu is typical bar food, but there is a good selection. As we visited on a Monday it was pretty busy, but we had a table booked so we got seated straight away. Our server was extremely friendly and forthcoming with some recommendations – I think it’s important for restaurant staff to have genuine opinions on the food they are serving. On my previous visit I had the Panang Chicken Curry, which I really enjoyed because the flavours were great and it had the perfect amount of spice for me. This time I wanted to try something new so I chose the Duck Frites; unfortunately they had run out of duck, so I changed to the Seafood Mixed Grill, which is a Spring Special. My boyfriend decided to have the Club Sandwich with Sweet Potato Fries.
Although I was disappointed at first that there was no duck, I was very happy that I ordered the Seafood Mixed Grill. The presentation wasn’t great, but it tasted better than it looked. It came with calamari, sea bream and a skewer of prawns and it was all very tasty – the sea bream was especially good! The Mixed Grill was served with a celeriac remoulade and toast with olive oil, as well as a dipping sauce; the dipping sauce was a great accompaniment for the prawns (I wasn’t a fan of the celeriac remoulade). Sam also cleared his plate and said that he really enjoyed his food; he’s a bit of a sweet potato connoisseur, but informed me that his chips were cooked perfectly.
Sam was tempted by desert and our server’s enthusiasm for the apple pie ensured that he had to have it – luckily he was not disappointed. We also ordered a couple of cocktails for an after dinner drink, I chose the Sub-zero G & T and Sam went for the Apple Spritzer. Although both cocktails were enjoyable, I would definitely order the Apple Spritzer again, as it was a bit sweeter than the Sub-zero G&T and very tasty!
I really enjoy the atmosphere in Rev because it has a very casual feel, but it always has a buzz about it, which means that it’s great for a meal or drink with friends. The only issue we had was after we had eaten, it took us a while to get our bill and finally be able to pay. However, I plan to go back to sample more of their cocktail menu soon.
